The Data Communications Technician is responsible for installing, testing, and maintaining low-voltage systems. This includes structured cabling, network infrastructure, fiber optics, and related hardware to support voice, data, and video communications. The role ensures compliance with industry standards, project specifications, and safety regulations while delivering high-quality installations.
TECHNICAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Fiber Optic Cabling: Expertise in running, terminating, and splicing fiber optic cables, with an understanding of different cable types and fiber construction.
- Fusion Splicing: Experience with both single and mass fusion splicing for creating precise, low-loss fiber connections.
- Access Control Systems: Hands-on experience with commercial access control panels and software.
- Electronic Hardware: Proficiency with electrified door hardware, including electric strikes, maglocks, and motion sensors.
- IP Networking: Strong understanding of IT network topology, including IP configurations and troubleshooting, to integrate access control hardware with the network.
- CCTV and Video Systems: Familiarity with both analog and IP-based video surveillance systems, as these are often integrated with access control.
- Testing and Troubleshooting: Skill in using specialized equipment like Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), power meters, and multimeters to test, measure, and diagnose system faults.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings to understand system layouts.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to carry out duties in varying work environments.
- Ability to travel for short periods of time to support job site activities.
- Regularly sit, stand, climb ladders and stairs, walk and talk and listen.
- Occasionally lift and move objects up to 30 pounds.
- Regular and predictable attendance is required.
- Ability to pass drug screen and background check.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
