Elk County Jail Upgrades

The Elk County Sheriff was in desperate need of updating the county jail, so he requested funding from the city council to help with the funding of this project. Before completing this project, Elk County had to send their prisoners to Dodge City to be housed which was costly and inefficient. Imagine Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show and the old jail cells portrayed in that show. That’s how Elk County jail appeared, which was built in 1912. Decker Electric was hired to update the jail.

Decker Electric updated the prison door system from a manual lever system that required constant maintenance to an automated, linear actuator system where a push of a button will open and close the doors. There are two cells that include four blocks each for a total of eight prisoners to be housed. Decker also updated the lighting and PA system.
